What is Aikido?

Aikido is a Japanese martial art. It’s not about fighting. It’s about being aware and responsive, not defensive or reactive. We learn to work with others and with circumstances, rather than opposing them. Our training applies as much off the mat as on it.

Underneath it all, it’s about connecting, with ourselves and others.

Grab My Wrist is where I write about Aikido. I share my tips for learning, training, testing, and teaching, along with reflections on my own experiences in those areas.

I discuss my own struggles and joys on the mat, and my insights when Aikido seeps into life outside the dojo — as it will.

You'll also find my reports from Aikido seminars and retreats (including my road trips along the way), fitness tips, occasional posts about highland games, and a bit about writing now and then.

My hope is that anyone interested in training will find the little push they need to get started, that new students will be encouraged to stick with it, and that long-time practitioners might find new perspectives here.

Hi, I'm Linda Eskin.

In May of 2009, at age 46, I started training in Aikido. I loved it right from the first class. The practice has inspired me, supported me, and expanded my vision of what was possible in my life.

Now, at 60, I'm still excited to go to every class. I hope you enjoy the same sense of wonder and play.

My Other Projects

Through Aikido I began taking fitness seriously - something I'd never before recognized as a possibility.

I earned my certifications in Personal Training, Group Fitness, and as a Kettlebell Instructor in my 50s.

At 60 I ran my first 5K, tested for the rank of sandan (3rd-degree black belt) the next week, and began competing in heavy athletics events at Highland games as a Women's Masters 60+ athlete.

I also write at Go You Fitness, and am working on books for people who maybe haven't seen an active, athletic life as a possibility for themselves. Yet.

MY VISION

It is my intention that Grab My Wrist be a resource for the entire Aikido community — especially new students, and new teachers.

I hope you will find the information here helpful and encouraging. I hope you will enjoy your Aikido practice, and will continue to train and teach.

When we continue our practice we personally benefit, our dojos benefit, and the whole community benefits. In the true spirit of Aikido, we all win.

GANBATTE KUDASAI!

Ganbatte kudasai is a popular Japanese expression of encouragement. It means "please do your best." Ganbatte alone is like saying "Get it!" "Try hard!" or "Go you!" Kudasai, or "please," makes it more formal or polite, softening the harsh effect of ordering someone to do well.

COME TRAIN…

I train at Aikido of San Diego, under Dave Goldberg Sensei, 6th Dan. I teach a Focus on Fundamentals class for students of all levels on Tuesday evenings.

If you’re in the San Diego area and thinking of starting training (or returning), we’d love to meet you. Observers, visitors, and new members are always welcome. Aikido of San Diego is a well-established dojo, with experienced instructors and friendly, vibrant, and inclusive community of dojo members.

Also be sure to check out my page Aikido Dojos in San Diego County. If you’re not in the San Diego area just search for “Aikido near me.” Aikido is practiced worldwide; there’s sure to be a dojo in your area.
